Simulation and Modelling of Turbulence and Combustion
Dr Stewart Cant Department of Engineering

Practical combustion systems such as gas turbines and industrial burners invariably involve turbulent flow. The design of such systems for very low pollutant emissions combined with high efficiency is made considerably more difficult by lack of fundamental understanding of the underlying processes of turbulent mixing and reaction. Current work in the Department of Engineering is aimed at using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) to obtain insight and statistical data which can then be applied to the development of improved physical modelling for the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) or Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approaches as used in industry. The talk will provide some details of the computational methods involved, some results from the very large simulations now being undertaken using the CCHPCF, and some examples of industrial applications.
